A garden is not just something you do to decorate. Gardening can be an activity for a lot people. It is not limited to simply green-thumbed enthusiasts. Gardening can have a very calming effect, and can really slow life down a bit, allowing you to find your inner peace. The dividends you yield are considerable, in particular when you mature into a great gardener.
Starting off your garden with healthy soil can be the best defense against those pesky garden bugs. If your plants are healthy, they can more easily resist insects and disease. So give your garden a kick start by beginning with a healthy batch of natural and organic soil.
If you want to cover up your walls or fences, make sure that you specifically use climbing plants. Climbers have many different uses and spread quickly. No need to worry if a bush or tree is in the way, as climbers can grow through them. Also, they can match the shape of an arbor. Some require ties attaching them to supports, but others will attach themselves to any surface nearby. A few good choices are climbing roses, wisteria, jasmine, honeysuckle and clematis.
Be sure to split the irises. Overgrown clumps of irises can be divided up to increase your numbers of this lovely flower. When you see the foliage is definitely dead, lift up the bulbous irises. The bulbs will naturally split in your hands, and after you replant them, will flower about a year later. Rhizomes, however, need to be divided by using a gardening knife. Cut new pieces from the outside and discard the old center. Each piece should have at least one strong offshoot. Set your cuttings into the ground right away.
Use the above tips to revitalize your garden. Once your garden is back to its blooming glory, you will feel gratified and renewed yourself. Gardening is a potentially life altering activity, but only if you permit it, so why not start now?
